Bipolar disorder is a mood disorder that has two extremes: mania and depression. The individual has alternating cycles of stable moods, mania (agitation, feeling euphoric, excessive energy, etc.), and depression (very low mood, changes in sleeping and eating, feelings of worthlessness, guilt, etc.) The reason why your doctor prescribed Trileptal is because it won’t trigger mania if you do happen to be bipolar. Certain medications, such as SSRIs (think Prozac or Zoloft) can trigger mania in bipolar patients, so those are either avoided or given in conjunction with mood stabilizers that will balance things out. Trileptal is actual a medicine used for epilepsy but also is used for depression. If you continue having difficulty with your symptoms, and you’re only seeing your general practitioner, I suggest you find yourself a good psychiatrist who is patient, reasonable, and able to explain the medications you’re taking, why your taking them, and what to expect and look out for. It can be dizzying and scary to be diagnosed with a mental illness, but with the right professionals and treatment, and support from people around you, it’ll be okay. Best of luck!

I suggest seeing another doctor, one who will be thorough in explaining this condition to you as well as treatment options. Always consult with a professional about the use of medications .

Only yesterday I watched repeated Oprah show on TV – the treatments and the symptoms varies on different people – God I do not know how to explain.

Some even feel suicidal as they cannot bare the pain – I guess the best answer I can give – go see the professional doctors about bipolar. General practitioner can’t really dignose this disorder.

Get help sooner the better. There are sickness we cannot dignose ourselves, even the proffesional take times to find out

Bipolar disorder is difficult to understand for most people. Historically, persons with bipolar may have been called simply moody or even insane at times. Later , the diagnosis was called manic-depression. There are two major phases of bipolar disorder. There is a lot of information and I am going to suggest a web site with more then enough info for you to understand. My only concern is that you said your doctor thinks you have bipolar. There is no ifs or buts you either do or you don’t. You need a second opinion. If you have bipolar disorder you can live a healthy life with medication, therapy, routines to have some degree of control. Check out the web site

    Hi there Jennifer,

I suffer with Bipolar myself and it has taken me around 3 or 4 years to fight for a diagnosis, i have had several opinions from many a doctor and never the right one, so i go to a centre which is based in Solihull and asked to speak to a leading Psychiatrist Consultant and explained my symptoms. One minute you are whats known as Hyper Manic which means you are usually bouncing of the walls, rapid speech, grandious ideas, know better than anyone else, spending too much, and then you hit rock bottom without a real come down and sink to the depths of the earth. There is no middle bit in Bipolar, you are never really stable (in the middle).

The best medications to hand to try and sort it is known as Lithium, yet Consultants are wary of giving this out as too much is a killer and too little will do nothing for you, and then there is something called Depakote (Sodium Valporate), which is really the next best thing, that would keep your manic phases under control followed by maybe an anti depressant like Sertraline for instance.

You really must speak to your GP about this as they do have to rule out other things first. I hope this helps

    Paul
